| |
Alexander’s Ragtime Band was a mas band
from Newtown in Port of Spain. They were responsible for
coming on the road on carnival day with a strong rhythm
music that was called steelband music. It was not pan
but iron, drums and other steel instruments that held a
constant rhythm for hours on carnival day. |

Am Jouvert Morning 1939
sah man die Alexander's Ragtime Band zum ersten mal auf
der Strasse Musik machen. Musik ist vielleicht eher
etwas übertrieben, die Männer machten Percussion mit
allen möglichen Dingen aus Metall. Angeführt wurde die
Band von Carlton Forde, auch "Lord Humbugger"
genannt. Es wird erzählt, dass er in Frack und Hut
gekleidet die Band anführte. Ein hagerer, dünner Mann.
Und wie er da so die Charlotte Street herunter gekommen
sei, hätte es ausgesehen, als käme der Tod persönlich.
Furchteinflössend? Keineswegs! Nach diesem Tag hat sich
alles verändert. Die Hell Yard haben sofort
angefangen Dustbins (Tonnendeckel), Tonnen,
Kessel und Kübel zu sammeln. Andere traditionelle
Tamboo Bamboo Bands taten es ihnen gleich. Dieser
Jouvert Morning war die Geburtsstunde aller zukünftiger
Steelbands. |

Around the neck |
| |
Pan around the neck is so called because
the pan is literally carried around the neck. Panists
started playing pan by placing a strap on the pan and
placing it around their neck so that they could use both
hands to play the instrument. Later they placed the pan
on their knees and sat to play it (with one stick)
whenever they played in a concert which they found to be
more dignified. Yes it is true. So much history our
steelpan. |

Zu Beginn wurden die
Pans zum Spielen around the neck, also an Gurten um den
Nacken getragen. Später fand man es nobler, sich bei
Konzerten nieder zu setzen und das Instrument auf Knien
abgestützt zu spielen (nur mit einem Stick). Davon ist
man wieder weg gekommen. Aber around-the-neck wird nach
wie vor gespielt. |

Ash Wednesday |
| |
Ash Wednesday is the day after carnival.
It is a Christian (Catholic) holiday that ended the
carnival celebrations. And begins the catholic Lenten
season for forty days where Catholics fast and avoid
meat. In Trinbago during the colonial period and up to
the 1970s NO PAN OR CALYPSO MUSIC was played on the
radio or in people’s homes. It was considered
blasphemous to play local music (amazing). Kitchener
sang a calypso on it called Mas in Lent. |

Am Aschermittwoch, dem
Tag nach dem Carnival Dienstag, ist der Carnival vorbei.
Wo vorher wochenlang jeder Wind mit Musik, Rhythmus und
Panmusik geschwängert war, herrscht jetzt tödliche,
schier unerträgliche Stille. Strenge Katholiken gehen
heute in die Kirche und beginnen die 40 Tage dauernde
Fastenzeit, was einem nach der ganzen Wohllust der
vergangenen Tage eher etwas befremden dürfte. |

Took his name from the legendary warrior by the same
name. |

1982-1962, geboren als
Raymond Quevedo. Er war einer der Calypsonians, der mit
half Calypso auch ausserhalb Trinidads bekannt zu
machen. Das berühmteste Lied dürfte wohl Roaring Lion
sein. In seinen Liedtexten hat er meist die Politik
kritisiert und viele seiner Aufnahmen sind zensiert
worden. Daraufhin komponierte er das Lied The Banning
of Records, welches natürlich auch sofort verboten
wurde. |
