Bacchanal

Bacchanal is a Latin word meaning ‘drinking a lot’ named after the Greek and Roman God of wine called Bacchus. In spring they used to celebrate the bacchanalien parties. It is a revelery considered obscene. Remember it was the Roman times with the Christians who scorned what they considered ‘Pagan’ rituals of debauchery and sexual pleasures of the Romans (what great guys and dolls). That is why they invented Ash Wednesday with the 40 days and nights of fasting to rid themselves of carnival. English good on bacchanal.

Ein vom griechischen Gott des Weines abgeleitetes Wort, das in der römischen Mythologie dann als Bacchus übernommen wurde. Zu Ehren Bacchus wurden im Römischen Reich die Bacchanalien gefeiert. In der Umgangssprache wird es angewandt als; Skandal, Streit, Verwirrung oder grosse Party. Carnival is Bacchanal!

Bad John

The fighters of the early steel bands, likely not panists. It was all about "law and order" in the panyards. It were the Bad Johns who gave the steel bands a bad reputation.

Früher hatte jede Steelband ihre Kämpfer, meistens keine Panists. Sie hingen in in den Panyards rum, um auf ihre Art und Weise für "Recht und Ordnung" zu sorgen; eben per Faustrecht! In den blutigen Kämpfen ging es meist um Frauen, Spione, Verräter. Es waren die Bad Johns, die den Steelbands einen schlechten Ruf einbrachten.

Bailey, Albert

Albert Bailey, well known Trinbago mas creator, who is the brother of the late George Bailey, who was also a famous Trinbago mas creator.

Kostümdesigner, kam 1978 mit "Die Rätsel der Aedes Aegypti" auf Rang 5 der besten Mas Bands. Es stellte ein Lehrstück über die Moskitoart dar, welche Gelbfieber und Denguefieber verbreitet. Das Thema war brandaktuell. Im Folgejahr nämlich, wurden auf Trinidad die ersten Fälle von Gelbfieber bekannt und am Carnival kreisten Flugzeuge im Tiefflug, um die Feiernden zu besprayen.

Bailey, George

Costume designer 1935-1970, aka the Monarch or African King. A very creative man who passed away as young man and ways too early. Several times he won the band of the year title.

Kostümdesigner 1935-1970, der sogenannte Monarch oder African King. Gründete seine erste Mas Band 1956, wenige Monate vor seinem 21. Geburtstag. Leider verstarb dieser vielversprechende Designer viel zu früh.

Baron

Baron has the smoothest voice in calypso. He is known as the soca man because he thrills the women at his concerts.

Background instrument, available in different pitches from single instruments to twelve pan sets.

Bass Pans sind die tiefsten Instrumente und gehören zu den Background Pans. Es gibt sie in verschiedenen Ausführungen (Tonlagen); vom Single bis zum Twelve Bass. Jawohl richtig: 12 Fässer werden gleichzeitig von einer einzigen Person gespielt!!

Batonye

The Batonye was a stick-fighter and his predecessor was the Negue Jardin form the 1770's. The Batonye came during the Jamet Carnivals and the Negue Jardin was a French colonial character, essentially the white men playing black slaves.

Batti Mamzelle

Batti Mamzelle is an insect (dragonfly) found in Trinbago. Kitchener named one of his famous calypsos after the insect. It means dipping and moving at a fast speed.

Batti Mamzelle is eine Insektenart (Libelle) in T&T. Kitchener benannte einen seiner Calypsos nach ihr.

Belafonte, Harry

Harry was born in Harlem, New York. He is from Jamaican parentage. Is responsible for promoting the Calypso in the 50s. Not a real Calypsonian but people understood his diction so they took to the Calypso.

Harry Belafonte stammt aus New York, seine Wurzeln sind in Jamaika. Eigentlich war er es, der Calypso in den 50er Jahren in die Welt hinaus brachte. Er ist nicht wirklich ein Calypsonian, trotzdem hat er viel für die Verbreitung der Calypso Kultur beigetragen.

Berkeley, Wayne

Costume designer, aka the Showman. Well known with his master piece in 1975 and the show "a la carte" (2nd), 20 groups parading as Hawaiian sea food cocktail. Several times he won the band of the year title.

Kam 1975 mit seiner Show "A la Carte" auf den zweiten Platz. 20 Gruppen von Kostümierten, die den Meeresfrüchtecocktail Hawaii darstellten, Crème de Menthe Frappé, Crêpe Suzètte, Truthahn in Cranberry Sauce, Champagner und Kaviar, Austerncocktail, Orange Sherbet, Parfait d'Amour usw. The Bertphone is an electronical amplified soprano pan created by Bertie Marshall.

Betancourt, Sterling

They say Sterling Betancourt was the man who introduced pan to Switzerland! But there has also been a Swiss in Bern, Felix Rohner, who knew and produced pan in 1976 for the steelband "Berner Oelgesellschaft" and that was before Sterling's time in this country... You see Swiss history is controverse as well.

Sterling, geb. 1924, gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Panpionieren der allerersten Stunde. Er hatte noch in Tamboo Bamboo Bands mitgespielt. Später spielte er Pan in der Band Tripoli, und wechselte dann als Bandleader und Tuner zu Crossfire. 1951 wurde er als Member für TASPO Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra ausgewählt, welche als erste Steelband an einem Musik Festival in Europa (London) teilnahm. Als die Band wieder nach Trinidad zurück ging, blieb Sterling in London und gründet mit Russel Henderson und Mervin Constantine ein Trio. Er amtete an verschiedenen Schulen als Steelpan Lehrer und bereiste als Spieler neben England; Indonesien, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Dubai, Deutschland, Frankreich, Spanien, Italien und 1976 die Schweiz. Das war der eigentliche Startschuss zu unserer Szene wie sie heute ist. Zu Ehren der Schweizer Steelbands hat er den Soca More Steelband than Snow komponiert. Sterling lebt heute in London, und spielt immer noch aktiv Pan.

Biscuit Drum

During the 50s Trinidad had a company that made biscuits (cookies) and put them in a large drum to distribute to its customers. Well, the panists used their creativity and used the empty drums to make pans. The drums were thicker and shorter which gave the tuners much room to express their craft. Hence, the biscuit drum pans.

In Trinidad gab es während der 50er Jahren eine Fabrik die Kekse herstellte. Um diese ihren Kunden auszuliefern, wurden sie in grosse Tonnen verpackt. Diese leeren Tonnen wurden von ganz kreativen Leuten dazu verwendet, die allerersten Pans herzustellen.

Blakie, Lord

Lord Blakie (Carlton Joseph) was a Calypsonian, he was given the name "the Warlord of Calypso" by David Rudder. One of his biggest hits was Steelband Clash. The Warlord passed away in the early 2005.

Lord Blakie (Carlton Joseph) war ein Calypsonian, auch unter dem Namen Warlord bekannt. Einer seiner grössten Hits war Steelband Clash. Er verstarb anfangs 2005.

Blending

Blending is a local term to describe the final tuning of a pan. Now most tuners are blenders but some are better blenders as well as tuners. It is truly local because in music a tuner tunes and there is no need for a final tuning from someone else. But blending is a special skill that some tuners have like Bertie Marshall or Wallace. They are known blenders who some steelbands would go to just before a competition to blend the pans. I hope I explained it well.

Pan stimmen, was nicht unbedingt von derselben Person gemacht wird, die auch Pans herstellt. Es gibt solche, die können oder wollen nur stimmen, aber nicht bauen.

Blockorama

The bands in the east without sponsors, including Curepe Scherzando came up with the idea to play at certain street points to raise funds. They would play at certain points. In Curepe and some other eastern towns - if you walk and keep turning left (or right), you would end up where you start, so you would have made a" block" The bands played on certain blocks, the "rama" bit was taken from Panorama as it was a similar performance of music by bands, but without the official judging and prize money.

Steelbands aus dem Osten Trinidads (incl. Curepe Scherzando), welche nicht gesponsert wurden, hatten die Idee, an verschiedenen Ecken und Plätzen zu spielen, und Geld zu sammeln. Blockoramas gibt es immer noch. Die Bands spielen gleichzeitig, und wenn man von einer Band zur anderen zirkuliert, um zuzuhören, schliesst man quasi einen Block. Das 'rama' kommt von Panorama, weil die Musik Qualität dem entspricht, ausser dass nicht juriert wird und keine Preise zu gewinnen sind.

Bois

Bois is a type of wood that was used for stick fights. It is also a war cry; ”Bois” when you did something amazing.

Eine Holzstange die für Stickfights gebraucht wurde. "Bois!" war auch Attacke-Schrei in den blutigen Stock Kämpfen.

Bomb

Starting in the late 50s the steelbands started to play classic music, Broadway tunes and pop tunes in a Calypso tempo on the road for the jouvert. Hence, jouvert bombs. They were called bombs because of the effect they had on the panjumbies on jouvert morning. Trinidad All Stars and Invaders were the top steelbands that captured the hearts and minds on the panjumbies on jouvert morning.

In den späten 50ern fingen die Steelbands an Klassische, Film- und Pop Musik in Calypso Tempo zu spielen. Mit ihrem Tune gingen sie am Jouvert Morning auf die Strasse, das war "the bomb", auch so genannt wegen dem Ueberraschungseffekt den sie jeweils auf die "Gegner" und Zuschauer hatten.

Bore Pan

Bore Pan was created by Denzil "Dimes" Fernandes, a tuner who felt that putting holes around the notes on the soprano (tenor) pans would give the instruments a more wholesome and round sound. Some of the steelbands used them as a sort of back up to the other soprano pans.

Denzil "Dimes" Fernandes hatte als erster Tuner den Versuch gemacht, dem Lead Pan (Tenor) eine andere Tonqualität einzuhauchen, indem er jedes Notenfeld durch kleine Bohrlöcher eingrenzte, mit dem Resultat, dass die Schwingungsenergie im Notenfeld "gefangen" war. Diese Pans haben eine deutlich längere Nachklingzeit. Bore Pans sind in weiter entwickelter Form auch heute im Einsatz. John "Jap" Chow, Mervin Ray, Tony Slater und Bertie Marshall haben das ihrige dazu beigetragen, um die Qualität der Instrumente zu verbessern.
