|
Lord Invader was a popular Calypsonian in
the 50s. He was very popular in New York in the United
States. His most famous Calypso is Rum and Coca Cola
which was misappropriated by the Andrew Sisters and
there was a big court case about it which Invader won. |

Invaders |
| |
Invaders is the first Trinidad steelband
to record their music on an album. They were also one of
the first steelband to be sponsored (Shell) by a
corporation. Their captain was the famous Ellie
Mannette who was the first pantuner to expand the
notes on the steelpan. In the 50s he tuned a soprano (tenor)
pan which many called the barracuda because of
its sound. Panjumbies used to call the band the Harps
because the band sounded so beautiful. The band took
their name from a movie of the time. Previously they
were called Oval Boys because of their location
next to the Queen’s Park Oval in Woodbrook, Port of
Spain. |

Die Invaders waren die
erste Steelband in T&T, die ihre Musik auf einer
Schallplatte herausgaben. Sie gehörten auch zu den
ersten Bands, die gesponsort wurden. Bandleader war
Ellie Mannette, welcher in den 50er Jahren zum
Beispiel ein Pan mit dem Namen Barracuda
produzierte. Weil die Band speziell anders, und speziell
schön tönte, wurde sie auch Harps genannt. Auch
dieser Name stammt von einem Hollywood Film jener Zeit.
Ihr erster Name aber war Oval Boys, weil sie ihr
Panyard neben dem Queen's Park Oval in Woodbrok hatten. |

Iron |
| |
Iron is the heart of the steelband. It is
used as accompaniment to the orchestra. Steelbands use
the hub caps from cars to provide the background rhythms
in the steelband. Some steelbands used to tune the iron
because of its importance to the tone of the band. Not
everyone was privileged to play the iron in a steelband.
You had to have a special skill to be chosen for that
special job. Famous iron player are Francis Wickham
and William ‘Turkey’ Bodkin. |

Irons sind alte
Bremstrommeln von Autos, wichtigstes Percussion
Instrument einer Steelband. Irons sind übrigens auch
getunt! Den Job als Ironman kann nicht jeder übernehmen,
es erfordert eine Menge Uebung und Erfahrung und vor
allem rhythmisches Durchhaltevermögen. Bekannte Ironmen
waren Francis Wickham und William "Turkey"
