The Jab Jab is the oldest Trinidad
Carnival character in existance today at the modern
carnivals. It was termed "coulee mas" as it was popular
in the rural districts and favored by East Indians. He
is descended from the Colonial Jesters that were in
existance during the slave days, and was probably was
developed into a fighter during the Jamet Carnivals
after the Emancipation of Slavery in 1834. This masque
does not wear or use paint, he in fact looks much like
the Medieval Jester, he was kind of a pretty devil (did
not wear horns) and wore a lot of clothes, but unlike
his cousins, did not brandish forks or whistles, but
rather carried a whip. They fought each other with whips
and all displayed a 'Fol' on their chests. Their faces
were covered and they wore a Jester hat. The idea was to
draw blood via the whipping and in turn destroy the fol.
After getting blows especially to the center chest area,
most would collasp. Their main characteristic feature
was their whip and the sound of it cracking usually
signaled a fight occuring or a band of them coming. They
can still be sceen today. |

Steel pan created in 1970 by Jomo
Wahtuse. With 32 notes it covered the range from
guitar
to soprano. It's meant to be a solo instrument. Wahtuse
made more than three of them, two were elliptical in
shape - 48 inches in length and 36 inches in width. The
other was rectangular having approximately the same
dimensions with radius corners. |

Jouvert, Joo-vay |

Jouvert is French for the opening of the
dawn. It describes mas in the early dawn. It starts
around 4 am but lately it is held as early as 2 am. It
is French as many of the Carnival terms since we got our
Carnival from the French who got it from Africa and was
developed in the late 1880's. |

offizielle Start zum Carnival und beginnt vor
Sonnenaufgang um 4 Uhr (oder noch früher). Man schmiert
sich von oben bis unten mit Schlamm, Altöl oder Farbe
ein. Wer's nicht von selbst tut, wird umarmt und
eingeschmiert. Am späteren Morgen formiert sich die
wilde Fete zum Umzug durch die ganze Stadt, welcher bis
tief in die Nacht dauert. |

Jumbie |

Jumbie is an African word meaning spirit.
Used a lot to describe a weird/eccentric person. Hence,
a 'pan jumbie' is someone who's totally consumed by pan.
Some of the old steel band men even call themselves "pan
whore". |
