Manetone Pan

A futuristic inconcept by Jomo Wahtuse in 1985. To reduce transport and storing space he separated the tuned face from the skirt of the pan. It was named in honour of Ellie Mannette and Tony Williams.

Eine futuristische Erfindung von Jomo Wahtuse im Jahre 1985. Spielfläche und Rand der Pan sind getrennt, dies um Transport- und Lagerungs-Volumen zu reduzieren.

Mannette, Elliott 'Ellie'

Ellie Mannette is, together with Winston "Spree" Simon, the great-father of the steel pan. Ellie's band were the Invaders.

Ueber Ellie Mannette's Schaffen zu schreiben, würde den Rahmen dieser Website sprengen. Er gilt, mit Winston "Spree" Simon, als einer der Urväter der Steelpan und war von den Invaders.

Mas Band

Mas bands are costume bands during the carnival celebrations.

Mas Bands werden die kostümierten Gruppen am Carnivals Umzug genannt.

Mas Camp

Mas Camp is the place where the mas is made for the Carnival. There people gather all night as the Carnival costumes are made. A bar in Port of Spain that houses Calypso shows for Calysonians is called Mas Camp.

Im Mas Camp werden die Carnivals Kostüme hergestellt. In Port of Spain gibt es eine Bar namens Mas Camp, hier werden Calypso Shows aufgeführt.

Marshall, Bertie Lloyd

Bertie Marshall was the founder of the former Highlanders Steelband. Formerly, he founded the Armed Forces Steelband. He captained Highlanders until its demise. He is also a great pantuner who has been Desperadoes Steelband resident pantuner for many years.

McBurnie, Beryl

Trinidad's first lady of Dance and Theatre. Ms. McBurnie championed the steelbands in the 1950s when it was not fashionable or respectable to do so. She recently died.

McWilliams, Irwin

Costume designer, won the mas band of the year title in 1978 with Know Yuh Country, 18 sceneries about Trinidad, played by more than 3000 revellers.

Kostümdesigner, auch genannt der Mann des Volkes. Wurde 1978 mit seiner Show Know Yuh Country als Mas Band des Jahres ausgezeichnet; 18 Szenenbilder aus Trinidad, dargestellt von über 3000 Menschen. Weitere Band of the Year Titel; 1971 mit Wonders of Buccoo Reef und 1972 mit Anancy Story.

Merchant

Merchant was Calypsonian and composer who composed the famous Pan in Danger. He wrote for many Calypsonians.

Merchant (Dennis Franklin Williams), einer der grossen Calypso Stars der 1999 arm und gebrochenen Herzens an AIDS verstorben ist. Noch in seinem Krankenbett liegend, hatte er 40 Hits komponiert, unter anderem Pan in Danger.

Midnight Robber

Midnight Robber is a character in the carnival. He is dressed in a large hat with decorations and gives speeches to passers by.

Eine der farbigsten Carnivalsfiguren der sogenannten Old Time Mas.

Midrange

The mid range pans or supporting voices of a steel orchestra (Alto and Tenor), such as the guitars, cello and quadrophonic pans.

Die mittlere Stimmlage einer Steelband (Alto und Tenor), die Begleitung. Dies sind Guitars und Cellos, auch Quadrophonics.

Probably the most best known costume designer world wide.

Wohl der berühmteste Kostümdesigner, hat schon einige Male den ersten Preis für seine Band gewonnen und wurde 1992 für die Eröffnung der Olympischen Spiele nach Barcelona geholt. Sein Geheimrezept sind nicht bloss die fantasievollen Kostüme, sondern dass jeweils beinahe ein ganzes Theaterstück dargestellt wird. Einige glanzvolle Höhepunkte:
1976 Paradise Lost
1979 Kostümband des Jahres mit dem Thema "Carnival of the Sea". 2000 Kostümierte, die alle Aspekte der See spielten: Seeleute, Wellen, Haie, Quallen, Krabben, Garnelen, Red Devil Fish, Aale, Oktopus, Seeigel, Seepferdchen, Seeschlangen, Schildkröten, Seemöven, Pinguine und Devil Ray den Teufelsrochen, der dann auch gerade den Sieg in der Kategorie "Kings & Queens" holte.
1981 Jungle Fever
1983 Thema "River". Ueber 3000 Bandmitglieder erschienen in dem sonst so farbenprächtigen Carnival in weissen Gewändern. Sie repräsentierten gleichzeitig die verschiedenen Flüsse und Bevölkerungsgruppen der Insel. Minshalls Queen "Washerwoman", verkörperte das Gute, der King "Man Crab" das Böse. Während King and Queen miteinander kämpften, wurden alle Kostüme als Symbol für die Verschmutzung der Flüsse bunt gefärbt. Dies war der Auftakt zu einer Trilogie.

1997 "Tapestry" Höhepunkt von Halleluja
2004 "boykottierte" Minshall auf seine Art den Carnival, seine Band nahm nicht am Umzug teil. Er wollte damit ein Zeichen setzen und wieder zu mehr Fantasie aufrufen!

Minstrels

A Carnival charactere. A quartet with white painted faces to imitate Americans. The Minstrels sing freedom songs of slavery, accompanied by Guitar, Tambourine, Chac-Chac and Toc-Toc.

Carnivalsfigur, die fahrenden Musikanten oder Minnesänger. Die Minstrels sind friedliche Figuren und treten als Quartett auf. Sie malen ihre Gesichter weiss an und imitieren Amerikaner. Begleitet von Gitarre, Tamburin, Shac-Shac und Toc-Toc singen sie Lieder von Freiheit und Sklavenbefreiung.

Modernaires

'De Original Woodbrook Modernaires' started as pan-round-the-neck band one Saturday, in '72, for a college football game, between Fatima College (where Ray Holman was teaching) and Queen's Royal College (where Selwyn Taradath and Chris Glaude went to school). The band jammed so much that Fatima contracted them to go with them to Presentation College (San Fernando), the very next week to support them. That was when Chris Glaude came up with the name Modernaires, because he
said 'well now that people are hiring the band,... we gotta have a name". Ian (Grabler), Glaude, Andy, Courtney, Boogsie (who converted some pans to single pans), Bryan Parris, and about three or four others formed Modernaires, for inter college football..... and they are still going strong.

'De Original Woodbrook Modernaires' ist ein Single Pan Ensemble welches an einem Samstag in 1972 für ein Fussballspiel zwischen dem Fatima College (wo Ray Holman Lehrer war) und dem Queen's Royal College (wo Selwyn Taradath und Chris Glaude zur Schule gingen). Die Band beeindruckte so sehr, dass das Fatima Team sie unter Vertrag nahm, um sie zum Spiel im Presentation College in San Fernando zu begleiten, welches bereits in der folgenden Woche statt fand. Chris Glaude meinte darauf, dass wenn sie bereits Aufträge erhalten, müssten sie auch einen Namen haben, so kam es zu Modernaires. Ian (Grabler), Glaude, Andy, Courtney, Boogsie (welcher ein paar Pansets zu Single Instrumenten umfunktionierte), Bryan Parris und noch etwa drei oder vier andere bildeten die Band Modernaires, alleine gedacht für einen Gig an einem Inter College Fussballspiel. Die Band konnte bis heute aufrecht erhalten werden, sie nimmt jährlich am Panorama in der Single Kategorie teil.

Mohammed, Amin

Mohammed, Lennox 'Bobby'

Steelband pioneer, used to play with the Guinness Cavaliers steel orchestra from San Fernando. Bobby grew up with his sister Lynette and the two brothers Selwyn and Lester. Unlike Selwyn and Lester, Bobby was so quite, you could never imagine that explosive talent emanated inside. All the big bands in Port of Spain (Pan Am North Stars, Desperadoes, Highlanders, Starlift, West Side Symphony, All Stars etc.) dominated the scene and propelled steel band music in the 1960. The creative years, as so many eminisce about - but they looked upon anything that happened in San Fernando as amateurish. Out of this very quite, soft spoken man emerged a superhuman and the entire south of Trinidad had a hero at last. When they won Panorama you should have seen San Fernando's response on Jouvert morning as Guiness Cavaliers came along Coffee Street playing to screaming fans all the way. Bobby's brother, Selwyn was one of the best tenor players at the time, he won the national solo competition several times and went on to arrange for Renegades but he takes his career very seriously, first being teacher and later a very successful lawyer and probation officer. Lester, is a still very serious teacher. Their only sister Lynette is also a retired teacher as was their father and mother. A top musical adjudicator from Oxford University once said of Bobby, at the conclusion of the Trinidad Steelband Music Festival of 1966, that he could be compared to any of the great music masters, for his share genious. Bobby had written two awesome classical musical scores for the festival - and all this is by ear. He cannot read music, even though his mother taught music.

Moko Jumbie

Moko Jumbie is stilts that young men would climb and walk on during the Carnival. It is an African tradition. There is also a history of the Moko Jumbie and how he (temporary) died out. He traveled with a companion that was not on stilts, he collected money and the Moko Jumbie would usually collect money from those people living on the 2nd floors of buildings in POS. In those days the merchants lived over their business on the 2nd floors. When the trams were introduced that was the end of the Moko Jumbie as he could not safely navigate throught the many crossing cables and wires. Keep the Moko Jumbie alive!

Der Hochstelzenläufer, eine weitere Carnivals Figur, kommt ursprünglich aus West Afrika. Die Figur war beinahe am Aussterben, der Brauch wird aber wieder aufgenommen und es gibt sogar eine Moko Jumbie Schule für Kinder.

MUTT

Musician's Union of Trinidad and Tobago (MUTT). It is the only Non Governmental Organisation representing musicians in T&T, new founded in July 2006 and headed by Patrick Arnold. MUTT is open to everyone and it's the only union whose members have created an instrument.

Die Organisation wurde im July 2006 neu gegründet und wird von Patrick Arnold geleitet. Die Organisation ist offen für alle und sie ist stolz darauf, dass sie die einzige Organisation der Welt ist, dessen Mitglieder ein Musik Instrument kreiert haben. Bloss, mit dieser Erkenntnis alleine ist noch nichts an Aktivität im Sinne dieser neuen Organisation getan worden. Es wird sich erst in Zukunft herausstellen, ob sie was bewirken kann, oder ob es einfach eine weitere 'Schlaf- und Ruhestätte für Präsidenten' wird.
