In the 1960s people used to push the steel
pans on Carnival days (some still do). There were no
trucks to pull the instruments. Hence, the word pan
pusher to refer to people who pushed the pans. |

Pan Trinbago is the organization
responsible for the steelband movement. This
organization is the fourth pan organization formed to
protect the interests of the steelpan and panists of
Trinbago. It’s current President is Patrick Arnold.
Former presidents were Arnim Smith, George Goddard and
Owen Serrette. |

Panyard |
| |
Panyard is the place that house steelbands
in Trinbago. It is so called because the steelbands are
placed in a yard, usually the yard of the steelband’s
leader. There they practice and used the yard as a
community center. |

die Steelbands üben. Es ist auch Ort wo man sich für
Lime und Party trifft. Richtige Panjumbies verbringen
ihr halbes Leben im Panyard. Heute werden ganze
Touristengruppen in Panyards geführt, manchmal bloss für
10 Minuten um schnell ein Foto zu machen (damit man das
im Reise-Programm auch abgehakt hat). In dieser kurzen
Zeit wird kaum jemand vom tieferen Sinn eine Panyards
Notiz nehmen; ein Panyard ist ein soziales
Begegnungszentrum. Das war früher nicht immer so.
Damals durften nur Bandmitglieder ins Panyard kommen,
alle anderen wurden per Faustrecht vertrieben, weil man
sie als Verräter und Spione ansah. Eine Frau hatte schon
gar nichts im Panyard verloren. Jedenfalls sahen dies
ihre Eltern nicht gerne. Die jungen Frauen gingen
natürlich trotzdem, oder erst recht hin. Sie waren die
anonymen Berühmtheiten. Man stelle sich vor; ich habe in
T&T ein über 60 jähriger Mann getroffen, der mich
beauftragt hat meiner Nachbarin einen Gruss auszurichten
"because she was the hottest girl in Silverstars!".
Als ich dies (im Beisein ihrer Eltern) tat, deutete sie
mir erschrocken an zu schweigen. Offenbar wissen ihre
Eltern bis heute nicht, dass sie mal dort verkehrte.
Wohlverstanden, die Frau ist heute weit über 50. Dies
hat sich zum Glück verändert. Heute dürfen Frauen auch
hin und Pan spielen! Es ist mittlerweile sogar berichtet
worden, dass in einigen Panorama Bands der Anteil Pan
spielender Frauen überwiegt. |

Paramin |

Paramin is a village in Trinidad and home
to the traditional Devil Mas. Devil Mas or
Playing Jab is a fascinating assignment during
Carnival and starts from small. A well-established
charactere in Paramin is the Blue Devil. |

Teufelsfigur besonders gepflegt wird. Devil Mas oder

Parang |
| |
Parang is songs in Spanish accompanied
with cuatros, fiddles, violins and chac chac It is
derived from the Venezuelan heritage of Trinbago. It was
started by members of the Spanish community. It is
performed during the Christmas holidays. Today you have
many Calypsonians singing parang music among whom the
most popular are Scrunter, Baron and
Crazy. |

to Trinbago by Hindu members of the Indian community who
came as indentured servants of the British colonials who
ruled India at the time. |

| |
Phase II is a popular steelband of
Trinbago whose leader is Len "Boogsie" Sharpe.
The name Phase II came about because Noel "Stove"
Seon and Bryan "Sayman" Parris were both
working on a project, being built by N.H.A. (The
National Housing Authority), in Laventille, somewhere
between Despers and Tokyo. Parris was
working in the office at "Phase 4" and Seon was working
in the office at "Phase 2". Noel Seon gave the band that
name!
Achievements:
1974 The band releases their first 12 song album
1974 First Steelband to hold a fund-raising barbeque
1977 The band wins the Panorama North Zone Championship
(I Like To Beat Pan)
1977 The band releases its second 12 song album
1977 First Steelband to incorporate brass instruments
1978 The band's prize for placing 3rd in the National
Panorama finals was a playing
trip to Miami where, true to
form, they dazzled and wowed their audiences.
Within two weeks of their
return, they were setting a new record as the first
steelband to perform in Cuba.
In the ensuing years, Phase II would go on to
perform as cultural abassadors
of T&T to Aruba, France, Japan, Martinique,
Puerto Rico and the United
Kingdom despite the absence of a sponsor.
1979 The band releases an album featuring its musical
director, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe
("Phase II Pan Groove Presents
Boogsie").
1980 The band competes in its first Steelband Music
Festival. This is the first band to
compete using locally composed
music. The music was composed by Len
"Boogsie" Sharpe.
1987 First band to win Panorama finals with an original
composition (Dis Feeling Nice)
1988 First band to win 2 consecutive Panorama
Championships with an original
composition (Woman Is Boss).
1989 First band to win consecutive Panorama North Zone
Championships
2005 The band grabbed its third Panorama Championship.
This is the first band to
ever win by a 20 point margin (Trini
Gone Wild).
2006 The band grabbed its 4th Panorama Championship with
an original composition
(This One Is Four You, Bradley).
2006 The band was part of the cultural team (Soca
Caravan) who accompanied the
Soca Warriors football team to
the World Cup final matches in Germany. |

earlier days. Sometimes the pan tuner cut the rim shorter thus giving
easier access to the
upper part of the notes - what they used to call a pregnant pan. |

Pretender, Lord |

Lord Pretender was a famous Calypsonian.
He won the Calypsonian competition in the 50s with his
popular hit Que Sera Sera. |

Alric "Lord Pretender"
Farrell, auch Preddie genannt, war ein
grossartiger Extempo und Calypso Sänger. Er hat
nie geheiratet und bereits 1929 im Calypso tent
Redhead Sailor zu singen begonnen. Meistens hat er
Sozial-Themen besungen oder hat sich auf den
traditionellen Kaiso konzentriert. Mighty
Sparrow sagte einst Pretender sei der Meister des
Extempo. 1973 wurde er Extempo King. 1972 wurde er mit
dem Award des Trinidad & Tobago Public Service für
Calypso mit der Silbermedaille und 1994 mit der
Goldmedaille des Trinidad & Tobago Humming Bird für
Kultur ausgezeichnet. Trotz all dieser Awards ist er
2002 in Armut gestorben. |

A structure of six pans arranged like a
pyramid. Invented in Switzerland, a collaboration
between the
Swiss/Finnish pan tuner Esa Tervala (back then attached
to the pan factory CosmoPan, today E.T. Pan Works) and
the British pan factory Happy Drum (Dudley Dickson;
Grenada/Grafton Yearwood; St. Vincent). Kind of a cello
pan with three full octaves. |
