Tamboo Bamboo

Tamboo bamboo bands were the first mas bands for Carnival days. They are bamboos cut to different lengths to get different sounds. This was a before the steelband.

Tamboo Bamboo bands waren die ersten Mas Bands am Carnival. Bambusrohre in verschienen Längen und Dicken wurden rhythmisch und in differenzierten Winkeln auf den Boden geschlagen. Auch hier gab es schon die Stimmlagen Soprano (Cutters), Tenor (Fullers), Alto (Chandlers), Bass (Boom). Tamboo Bamboo Bands sind die Vorläufer heutiger Steelbands. Am Heritage Festival auf Tobago kann man noch traditionelle Tamboo Bamboo Formationen sehen und hören.

TASPO

TASPO was the first steelband orchestra to travel to England for the music festival held there at the time. The band was led by Inspector Griffith of the police band. Eleven panists were chosen from the steelbands which were members of the then steelband association. They traveled to England and performed for the festival and won the hearts of the British people who had never heard or seen a steelband before.

Mit dem TASPO Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra reiste Steelpan erstmals von Trinidad weg (nach Europa). Dieses Orchester setzte sich aus elf Panmen verschiedener Steelbands Trinidad's zusammen und tourte in Paris und London unter der Leitung von Joseph Griffith.

Tassa Drum

Tassa drum is a traditional east indian instrument. In order to raise the tone to an optimal pitch and to tighten the skin a tassa drum needs to be heated before one can play it. And then it's played with two sticks. Also a tassa group consists of the lead, the supporting and the bass drums as well as a pair of cymbals named Jhanji.

Tassa Drums sind traditionelle indische Trommeln. Bevor die Trommel gespielt werden kann, muss sie erhitzt werden um den Fellen die nötige Spannung zu geben, damit die perfekte Tonlage erreicht werden kann. Eine Tassa Trommel wird auch around-the-neck und mit Sticks gespielt. In einer Tassa Formation gibt es Lead, Begleitung und Bass, dazu gehört eine Art Cinelle mit dem Namen Jhanji.

Teague, Liam

Panist from San Fernando who arranges for the Skiffle Bunch steel orchestra. Mr. Teague has a Masters degree in music from the University of Illinois and is a professor there.

Panist aus San Fernando, arrangiert zur Zeit für Skiffle Bunch. Besitzt ein Hochschulabschluss in Musik der Universität Illinois und arbeitet heute an derselben als Professor.

Tennis Player

Students (beginners) who tend to play pan with one hand only, and have problems to play with both hands.

PanschülerInnen die dazu neigen immer nur mit einer Hand zu spielen und grosse Schwierigkeiten haben beide Hände in Einsatz zu bringen.

Tenor Fugle

An invention by pan tuner Pedro Burgess. It was a simple idea - most of the soloists use a double second, he then thought what if it was a short simple gig where one's only needed to play melodies as there are other instruments doing the chords and harmonies, etc.? This could be done on a normal first pan from "D"; but because you play a double alto, you have to take along your two pans - no choice, that is unless you wish to own other pans! He then thought - why not have an additional pan from "F" below middle "C" (same as on a double second), ascending nine notes to "C#" above middle "C", resulting in a double pan F - C# (Tenor Fugle) and Soprano Pan D - F : 9 + 24 = 33 notes, and the option of using one or two pans, depending on the type of gig. The name is taken from the word Fugal, the Latin for 'chasing after'; thus the fugle is chasing after the soprano pan. Fugleman Pedro Burgess is fugling it on his CD. Milton Lisle Joseph 'Wire' Austin of Fonclaire's nephew, Wade, who also lives in England, liked the idea, and got one made by pan tuner Ezekiel 'Biggs' Yearwood, but from "G". You can hear that one on Wade's CD.

Eine Erfindung von Pantuner Pedro Burgess. Eine kleine Zusatz-Pan mit 9 Noten von F - C#, die neben einem single Soprano (D-F, 24 Noten) gespielt wird um den tonalen Bereich nach unten zu erweitern (total 33 Noten). Das hat den Vorteil, dass das single Soprano alleine verwendet werden kann, oder je nach Gig Einsatz (bereits vorhandener, oder eben fehlenden Stimmen) die Musik mit dem zusätzlichen Fugle 'gedopt' werden kann. Fugle und Soprano Pan werden von einer Person gleichzeitig gespielt, wie andere double Pan Sets auch.

Tenor Pan

Tenor pan is actually the soprano pan in the steel orchestra. It is still known by the misnomer of ‘tenor’ pan although panists will admit it is not. Available as single and double pan set.

Veralteter Name des heutigen Soprano. Die Lead oder First Pan, welche die Melodie spielt und somit im Orchester die höchste Stimmlage übernimmt. In den Anfängen hatte das Instrument noch nicht dem heutigen Notenumfang entsprochen (weniger als 10 Noten) und spielte tatsächlich nur im Tenor Bereich. Obwohl sich das Instrument längst weiter entwickelt hat, konnte der Name nie so richtig ausgebürgert werden. So gibt es heute Single 'Tenors' und Double 'Tenors' (Alto), beide gehören zu den Frontline Pans und sind für den Laien als die kürzesten Pans erkennbar (je länger die Pans/ Randleiste, desto tiefer die Stimme)

Terror

Mighty Terror, Calypsonian, Fitzgerald Cornelius Henry, also named the Golden Voice. Born on 13th January 1921, passed on 14th March 2007. Calypso King with 'Steelband Jamboree' (among other songs, also for the British Calypso competition).

TISHOF

TISHOF stands for "The International Steelband Hall of Fame". TISHOF was founded by Khalick J. Hewitt, who is a panologist and writes about the steelband movement and its history. The task of TISHOF is to give internet recognition to those who have struggled to make the steelpan an international instrument.

TISHOF steht für "The International Steelband Hall of Fame". TISHOF wurde von Khalick J. Hewitt eingeführt. Khalick ist Panologist und schreibt über Entwicklung und Geschichte der Steelpan und Steelbands. Das Ziel von TISHOF ist, jenen Persönlichkeiten via dem Medium Internet öffentlich Anerkennung zu erweisen, die sich mit besonderen Kräften dafür einsetzten, damit das Instrument Internationale Anerkennung erfuhr, und hoffentlich verstärkt erfahren wird.

Tobago is the sister twin-island of Trinidad that makes up Trinidad and Tobago which is the official name of the country.

Tokyo

Tokyo is a steel orchestra who took its name from the movie Destination Tokyo. At first they call themselves Destination Tokyo but later changed it to simply Tokyo.

Steelband die ihren Namen vom Hollywood Film Destination Tokyo übernommen hat, später aber das Destination im Namen strichen.

Traditional Band

Traditional band is the name of the small steelbands that put the pans around the necks of the panists unlike the large bands that are called conventional.

Traditionelle Bands werden die kleinen Steelbands genannt, die mit single Instrumenten spielen. Früher around-the-neck, später auch auf Ständern. Seit derm Carnival 2006 werden die Bands offiziell nicht mehr Traditional Bands, sondern Single Pan Ensembles genannt.

Trinbago

Trinbago is the unofficial name for Trinidad and Tobago. In the 1970s some people believed that the name was too long. It was shortened to Trinbago. Today it is used by many people and even the local newspapers.

Trinbago ist die Abkürzung für Trinidad & Tobago. In den 70er Jahren fanden die Leute den Namen lang, und haben diese Kurzform in die Alltagssprache eingeführt. Heute wird er gar von Zeitungen so verwendet.

Trinidad All Stars

Trinidad All Stars is a steel orchestra whose founder was Neville Jules who is still alive and lives in Brooklyn. He is considered captain emeritus of Trinidad All Stars. It is told that in the early days All Stars players used to practice with their hands only, without any sticks over the pans, to keep their preparations secret.

Trinidad All Stars ist eine Steelband, gegründet von Neville Jules, welcher heute in Brooklyn lebt. Früher wurden Spione ausgesandt, um heraus zu finden was andere Steelbands vorbereiten. Aus diesem Grund übten die All Stars Panists im Geheimen, bloss mit den Händen und ohne Sticks.

Tuner

The person who does the pre-tuning, tempering/burning and the final tuning of the steel pan. We don't pick up HOW to make a pan in this ABC, since you can find that on hundred other websites. Anyway, best bet is to visit a tuner at work, we are quite sure that he will gladly show and explain you the procedere of his art work.

Der die Pans vorstimmt, erwärmt, stimmt. Tuner wird aber auch das Gerät genannt, dass der Tuner zur Feinabstimmung der einzelnen Töne zu Hilfe nimmt.
