St. Lucian and recipient of the Nobel
Prize for literature (1992), made history in and for
Trinidad and Tobago with the production of the musical
'Steel'. Written and premiered in Massachusetts 1991 (music
composed by Galt McDermot). The musical was only staged
in Trinidad, 14 years later. The musical portrays the
development of steel pan music in the 30s and 40s as a
metaphor for the Caribbean's struggle to shake itself
free of European colonial domination and assert its own
cultural identity. Most of the action in Steel takes
place in panyards. The play featured some musicians of
Desperadoes. |

West Indian is a misnomer. Christopher
Columbus believed he had discovered India and named the
region West Indies but he was wrong. Hence, the term
West Indian is used to describe someone from the West
Indies. But, progressive people use Caribbean People. |

Anthony Williams was the founder and
leader of North Stars Steel Orchestra. He created
the spider web design that was used by North
Stars. During the 1960s North Stars was considered the
best steel orchestra. |

Anthony Williams gehört
mit Bestimmtheit zu den wichtigsten Erfindern in der Pan
Entwicklungs Geschichte. So hat er zum Beispiel in
seiner Spider Web den Quinten und Quartenzirkel
ins Instrument übertragen, die Racks auf Rädern erfunden
und als erster ein Instrument aus industriell
gefertigtem Metall, und nicht aus einem fertigen Oelfass,
zusammen gebaut. Er war auch Manager und hervorragender
Arranger. Seine Band waren die North Stars, er
gehörte auch zu den auserwählten Panmen, die mit
TASPO auf Europa Tournee gingen. |
