Yellow Bird |
|
Jamaicans and Trinidadians, both claiming
that the song originated on their island, when in fact
they were both wrong. The true origins of the favorite
Caribbean song "Yellow Bird" are in Haiti. The real name
was "Shukun", had a great significance in Haiti, and it
was over a hundred years old when it became popular in
the 60's. Almost none of the other 'island songs' came
from the island! Most of them, like "Jamaica Farewell",
"Island in the Sun", "Matilda", "Day'O", etc., were
written by jewish New Yorkers, for some Harry Belafonte
movies, (late 50's or early 60's). Movies like "Fire
down Below" and "Island in the Sun". Most people have no
idea that these are not really island songs at all, but
rather Hollywood interpretations of island music. |

Island Feelings. |
