Das Trinidad & Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra wird am Avenches Tattoo teilnehmen. Das Avenches Tattoo wird in der magischen Stätte der römischen Arena von Avenches durchgeführt. Das im 1. Jahrhundert erbaute Amphitheater ist einzigartig in der Schweiz. Es bietet grossen kulturellen und musikalischen Events einen einmaligen Rahmen. Die Arena hat eine Kapazität von 5000 Sitzplätzen – alle mit hervorragender Sicht auf die Aufführung. Auch die Akustik ist auf allen Plätzen perfekt.

Steel Parrots @ Zulauf AG

Steel Parrots Steelband vor der Südseebar im Gartencenter Zulauf. In einem anderen Treibhaus ist gleichzeitig eine grosse Gartenbahnausstellung, beim Bahnhof ist ein Bahnfest mit Festwirtschaft. Für die Kinder hat ein einen Spielplatz gleich nebenan.

Steel Band Concert @ St Mary the Virgin Church

To give the band its full name, it is the Worksop & District University of the 3rd Age Steel Band – so all the players are retired or semi-retired and come together to continue their educational, social, and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment.

From Skin to Steel & Beyond: Steelpan Family Workshop @ Evergreen Brick Works

Join musician, composer and art educator Joy Lapps-Lewis for an engaging hands on workshop experience. Participants are invited to explore the rich history of the steelpan. The workshop is open to families with children 7-14 years old. In addition to steelpan, each participant will have the opportunity to play instruments including skinned drums, tamboo bamboo, iron, and other percussion instruments that are cornerstones of steelpan history.

This workshop is a component of Joy’s larger project at the Evergreen Brick Works entitled “From Skin to Steel and Beyond”. This steelpan-centered music creation, community workshop and performance project explores how natural environments have impacted the development of the steelpan and how the instrument has responded by impacting our cultural and social environments.

Participants do not need to bring any materials. Simply RSVP to reserve your spot and come ready to learn and have a good time. If you can’t join us September 15, 2019, look out for our final event on November 29, 2019.

Please note that parents/guardians are expected to participate in the workshop with their children. Children are not to be dropped off.

House Concert in Fishoek @ Private House

It’s a concert at a private house in Fishoek (address via email to all those who book) with Pops Mohamed, Dave Reynolds and special guest, Shaun Johannes.

The show’s called “Ancient Wisdom”, featuring Pops on kora (21string West African harp), mbira (Zimbabwean thumb piano) and Khoisan mouth bow, Dave on Caribbean steelpans, 10-string classical guitar and Paraguayan harp, and Shaun on bass.

Doors open 19h45, the show starts soon after this. Bring your own drinks, we’ll provide the glasses.

Pops Mohamed is SA’s leading indigenous crossover artist. He has released 38 albums to date, been awarded three Lifetime Achievement Awards and regularly tours the world with the likes of Andreas Vollenweider, Cat Stevens and Baaba Maal.

Dave Reynolds is SA’s leading steelpan player, an award winning composer, acoustic guitarist and harpist. He has recorded and performed all over the world with Andy Narell, Hugh Masekela, Steve Newman & Gito Baloi (of Tananas), Tony Cox and Paul Hanmer to name a few. His most recent solo album “The Light of Day” was nominated for three SAMAs.

Shaun Johannes has played bass with George Benson, Jonathan Butler, Freshly Ground, the late Johnny Clegg, the late Hugh Masekela and others. He currently lectures in jazz studies at the UCT College of Music.

Dave & Pops have done over 200 concerts together. They are currently composing music for a movie about the rituals and ceremonies of the San people of the Kalahari, taking time out to do this concert for you.

Barrels to Beethoven @ Heinz Memorial Chapel

Barrels to Beethoven is an organization focused on Arts Education, Making and Innovation. Our programs utilize the steelpan, a musical instrument from the Caribbean, as the tool and basis for our educational programming. Barrels to Beethoven provides engaging, entertaining and interactive opportunities for the public, especially youth, to learn about the steelpan, music theory and performance technique. The ultimate goal of the organization is to provide a unique option for arts education as well as develop a new generation of steelpan players, builders, teachers and tuners, ensuring the growth and advancement of the instrument. The performance will feature both the youth ensemble and the professional band.

Rhythm is Life Steel Band @ Glendale Public Library

The Rhythm Is Life Steel Band formed in 2005 to provide a learning lab for band directors who were teaching steel pan groups in their schools. The sound mixes Caribbean island music (calypso, soca, and reggae) with rock, pop, and other musics from around the world. Thanks to the City of Glendale Performing Arts Partnership Grant, this concert is free and open to the public.
