Kulturfürabe mit der Steelband Lyss @ Kulturfabrik - Kufa

Herzlich willkommen zurück! Nach drei Monaten Stille und Leere nimmt die Kultur wieder etwas Fahrt auf und die KUFA lässt es sich nicht nehmen, kurzerhand die Tore ausnahmsweise im Sommer zu öffnen, um ein abwechslungsreiches Programm zu präsentierten.

Der Kulturfürabe jeden Donnerstag steht ganz im Zeichen von einem gemütlichen «Fürabebier», einer Portion Kultur in Form von spannenden Künstlern auf der Aussenbühne, sowie einem wöchentlich wechselndem Menu von der Food Crew Lyss. Der Eintritt ist jeweils frei und lebt von der moralischen Spendepflicht in Form einer Kollekte. Und keine Sorge: Wenn das Wetter einmal nicht mitspielt, wird der Abend einfach in die Halle verlegt.>

Il y a une histoire derrière le choix de l’instrument d’Andy Narell… Son père, travailleur social, amène le steel pan à New York dans le but de faire sortir les enfants des rues et les pousser à délaisser leurs gangs pour rejoindre des steel bands. Devenu ambassadeur de cet instrument peu commun, il est l’un des premiers à l’intégrer dans le jazz ce qui lui confère une place unique dans le spectre de la fusion. Du calypso à la world musique, en passant par des orchestres de steel pans sans oublier les collaborations avec Hugh Masekela, Mickeal Brecker ou Mike Stern, Andy Narell explore ! Un show puissant assuré avec la chanteuse cubaine Janysett McPherson. Repérée par le producteur de Nina Simone, Henri Salvador et Richard Galliano, elle impressionne par sa voix poignante aux graves onctueux et au phrasé impeccable.

Virtual Marimba & Steelpan Festival

ALL SCHOOLS, INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD are cordially invited to participate in the first ever EDUCATION AFRICA VIRTUAL MARIMBA AND STEELPAN FESTIVAL.

You may enter marimba bands or steel bands or mixed bands consisting of marimbas and/or steelpans and other instruments. There are also SOLO COMPETITIONS for marimba, xylophone, steelpan and vibraphone.

This Festival will also act as a fundraiser for Education Africa’s Marimba Hubs programme, so that we can continue the efficient running of this programme which directly benefits disadvantaged South African marimba bands.

Steelpanist Victor Provost and pianist Alex Brown co-lead a quartet that marries Jazz sensibilities with Caribbean swagger. Roots rhythms, swing, and soaring improvisations abound and the Trinidadian steelpan takes center stage as the quartet features original compositions alongside the beloved music of Chick Corea, Bob Marley, Vince Mendoza, and more.

Local and visiting steelbands come to Woodstock, IL to learn from renowned guest artists from around the world. The day-long event culminates in a world-class concert featuring guest bands and artists from around the world alongside local steelband, Potts & Pans.

Steel Drums play patio concert @ Cornell College
Apr 24 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Cornell steel drum bands, Toucan and Pandemonium, will perform an outdoor concert at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 24, on the Thomas Commons Patio.

The concert is free and open to the campus and local community members. Audience members are required to follow COVID-19 safety precautions and encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. The Cornell College Music Facebook page will livestream the concert.

The groups will perform popular and traditional music under the direction of Peter Grubisich, who comes to Cornell with a strong background as a percussionist and steel band leader. He holds a Master of Music degree in percussion performance from the University of South Carolina and is a doctoral candidate in percussion performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa.

Rain date: 5 p.m. April 25.
