In the 1950s, a US Navy admiral stationed in Puerto Rico dreamed of growing the popularity of Caribbean music among stateside Americans. The US Navy Steel Band, formed in 1957 by Admiral Daniel V. Gallery, eventually performed more than 20,000 concerts worldwide before disbanding in 1999. In 1973, the band moved from its original headquarters in Puerto Rico to New Orleans and became an integral part of both the local and national music scene.

On Wednesday, June 5, retired members of the band—many of whom stayed in New Orleans—will reunite for a one-night performance and lecture at THNOC. Under the guidance of Andrew R. Martin, professor of music at Inver Hills College, the group will explore the steel drum as a musical instrument and its repertoire.

Martin is the author of Steelpan Ambassadors: The US Navy Steel Band, 1957–1999 (University Press of Mississippi). His research is centered on the theory and analysis of American popular music, as well as various aspects of Afro-Caribbean music and its phenomenal dissemination throughout North America and the globe. His chief focus investigates the development of Trinidadian steel bands and pannists outside of Trinidad and Tobago. Since 2011, Martin has written a semiregular newspaper column, “Pan Worldwide,” for the Trinidad Guardian.

This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City.

Nach zwei Jahren Pause ist das Calypsonic Steel Orchestra zurück im FZW. Nachdem im Sommer 2017 mit “Life On Planet Pan” das erste Album veröffentlich wurde, feiert das Orchester in diesem Jahr bereits sein 10-jähriges Bestehen!

Der Verein Calypsonic e.V. wurde 2009 gegründet, das “Calypsonic Steel Orchestra” entstand kurze Zeit später aus der Jugend-Steelband „PanGanG“ und hat sich in den letzten Jahren einen Namen geschaffen, der über die Stadt- und Landesgrenzen bekannt ist.

Die Steelband begeistert mit authentischen Arrangements im Bereich Soca, Calypso und Reggae. Die musikalischen Ursprünge reichen von Trinidad & Tobago bis nach Europa und von Afrika bis nach Indien. Interpretationen von Bob Marley, den Beatles und Daft Punk gehören ebenso zum Repertoire wie Sting oder ein Violinkonzert von Bach.

Die Instrumente stammen aus der Karibik und umfassen sämtliche Stimmlagen von Bass bis Sopran. Ergänzt werden die Steelpans durch Schlagzeug und Percussion. Die Musik lädt zum Tanzen ein, aber auch zum Entspannen. Sie entführt in eine bunte Welt mit Klängen aus aller Welt.

Sei es durch außergewöhnliche Instrumente, ungewöhnliche Klänge oder raffinierte Arrangements meist bekannter Klassiker: Mit seinem einzigartigen Sound bringt das 18-köpfige Orchester die Karibik (mitten) ins Ruhrgebiet.

Beim Jubiläumskonzert präsentiert das Calypsonic Steel Orchester nicht nur die Songs seines ersten Albums “Life On Planet Pan”, sondern auch ein paar neue Hits und all-time Klassiker.

A Night of Fantasy, annual pannies celebration featuring performances by: Pan Fantasy alongside Earl La Pierre Jr., Chris Lewis, Mark Mosca, Darryl Williams, Dance Caribe Performing Company and appearance by Mayor John Tory. Silent Auction, 50/50 draw.
