Celebrating 20 years of steel drum music @ Pan Arts Panyard
Jan 31 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Pan Arts is celebrating 20 years of bringing the sweet sounds of steel drum music to the North Coast, with a free open house and community workshop.

There will be light food fare, performances by beginning/intermediate Pan Arts students and a short selection of music by Pan Dulce Steel Orchestra, the resident community band. A free introductory workshop, taught in the traditional rote style of Trinidad and Tobago, will be offered at 7 p.m. for those interested in learning to play. This teaching style allows those with little or no musical experience to join in the joy of music making.

Pan Arts began 20 years ago when local musicians Kate Lang-Salazar, John Salazar and Michael Skweir, inspired by performing in the 120-piece steel bands of Trinidad and Tobago, dreamed of bringing the spirit and camaraderie of Trinidad’s “Panyard” to the North Coast. Since then, they have taught steel drum, or “Pan,” classes to students of all ages and ability levels, worked with numerous local schools and directed Pan Dulce Steel Orchestra, an 18-piece steel band that performs for a wide range of local community festivals and events.

Ray Funk helps to kick off ttff’s 15th anniversary year!
The trinidad+tobago film festival is delighted to reprise beloved carnival aficionado, Ray Funk’s video presentation and talk, Gone But Not Forgotten, as part of our 15th anniversary celebrations!

Funk will present a celebration of pan pioneers who have passed away. His presentation will include a newly-discovered ten minute film called Panboo (shot in 1954), as well as clips of pan visionaries Ellie Mannette, Kim Loy Wong, Cliff Alexis, Pat Bishop, Ken “Professor” Philmore, Clyve Bradley and Jit Samaroo. This presentation was first offered as part of the film festival’s programming last August at CARIFESTA

Since CARIFESTA, Funk has continued to search for more rare early footage, and is excited to screen what he believes is the first film about steelpan. He found a newspaper clipping in a Canadian newspaper from 1955 referring to this short film, and arranged for it to be digitized from an archive. Funk only just got a copy and is very excited. “Before Panboo, there were a couple very short pieces of steelband footage in newsreels, but this is the first film about pan,” explains Funk. “It features the Woodbrook band Dixie Stars, who had traveled to Toronto as the first Esso Steel Band and later settled in Bermuda. It traces the evolution of pan from skin drums to steel, and it seems to have only ever had a few public showings in Canada back in the 1950s. I believe it is the first time anyone has seen this film in over sixty years!”

Gone But Not Forgotten is presented in partnership with The National Gas Company (NGC), The National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago and The Central Bank Museum.
