T&T - In 1951, an era when young middle-class women were kept far away from the steelband movement, “Ellie” Robertson joined the Girl Pat Steel Orchestra, the first all women steelband formed in Trinidad and Tobago by the late Hazel Henley, a teacher at St Crispin’s Anglican School.

BE - Recently a soprano steel pan was given to the mim (musical instruments museum) by the government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. To celebrate this donation of their national instrument to the Belgian state, the Our Boys Steel Orchestra performed in the concert hall at mim.

Recently I read about plans of the Trinidadian government to end the pan-in-the-classroom program and replace it with classes with various other instruments of different cultural background, paying dues to the eclectic musical heritage of Trinidad and Tobago. There was mention of cuatro, harmonium and sitar, to name a few. I have some thoughts about this matter that I would like to share.

USA - Every year the Hardwick community in Vermont holds its annual street festival. One of its many spectacles for the last five years has been Emily Lanxner's Jeudevine Music School Steelband. This pan group is made up of mostly kids and a few adults.
