Top Tip from a
British supplier
Several schools in particular are buying pans which may not stand up
well to school usage. One of the main problems is thickness of metal.
Pans for school use should be 1.1 or 1.2mm thick (this is often stamped
somewhere on the pan). So specify this when you order and do not accept
pans made from thinner materials.
Pan Supply Emergency
by Dave Edwards,
Steelbands North Newsletter September '07
No wonder so many bands, schools in particular are ordering pans
from catalogues. The last year or two has seen the delivery dates from
UK makers stretch from months into years and catalogue business is
growing steadily. Some customers are waiting for delivery on orders
placed up to two years ago, and we know of at least two bands or schools
who have cancelled and gone elsewhere. SN opinion is that it is still
better to wait as the end result will be much better instruments at a
more reasonable cost and with good after sales service. But some schools
are tied into budgets which have to be spent within a limited time and
are therefore not able to wait. Anyway no one wants to wait any longer
than necessary. Chroming can be a nightmare as the chroming factories
seem to keep the tuners waiting up to several months also. The moral for
us all is to plan well in advance and get your orders in as soon as
possible, remembering to specify exact layouts required, something that
isn't quite as straightforward when ordering from catalogues.
Steelbands North produce leaflets giving advice in buying, maintaining
and insuring pans which can be requested by
email.
The first SN Pan Tunebook is available at Steel Pan Squad meets, all
free, second book due soon. |
