Evidence-Based Steelband
Activities; Progression Through the Next Decades. Report of an
Investigative Study commissioned by Arts Council England and BAS. Rachel Gardiner,

In April 2005, Arts Council England, London and the British
Association of Steelbands commissioned the author to investigate
requirements within the steelpan sector regarding the professional
development needs of practitioners and the opportunities for
progression for young people.
From May to December 2005 information was gathered from steelbands,
tutors and band members through a mixture of questionnaires,
meetings and observation of sessions. Through desk-based research
and meetings, steelpan education within local authority music
services and current music education initiatives were also
investigated.
The session will provide an overview of the work and highlight some
of the requirements and opportunities raised for future development.
