Steelband Music and
Education in the 21st Century
Projecting a Vision of the Future through Global Experiences
The world-renowned
University of East London Dockland’s Campus was the venue
for the first European International Conference on Steelpan (30th - 31st
August)
organised by the University of East London, Nostalgia Steelband
and the
British Association of Steelbands.
This event brought together panists, composers, tuners, organisers, students,
teachers,
academics and the public to discuss and explore the potential
of this unique
art form into more
diverse dimensions of society.
A major goal of this conference was to help build a platform to gain
recognition
of this dynamic instrument to equivalent status of other
instruments
and facilitate its movement into higher education and academia.
We invited anyone with a keen interest in steelpan to participate
in
this unique event which comprised workshops and presentations.
The organisers of this conference gratefully acknowledge the support of the
following:

The University of East London
For making available excellent conference facilities
Samuel Dubois, Lionel McCalman and Marvin Barbe
For providing steel pan entertainment during conference breaks
Pantonic Steel Orchestra
For providing instruments for the workshop
